Standardized botanical extracts are those having specified levels of an active ingredient or a group of actives. In this way, the formulator is assured that each kilo of extract delivers a specified minimum level of active ingredient. These high potency extracts normally come in powdered form. Their primary market is nutritional supplements, but they can also be used in functional skin care products. Standardized extracts have a multi-step production process. The botanical is first extracted in an aqueous or hydro-alcoholic system. The crude extract is then often concentrated using vacuum and centrifuged. Lastly comes the drying process, most often using spray drying. Many standardized extracts are not water -soluble so they are best used in emulsions.
